Messy Bun Ear Flap Hat Free Crochet Pattern!


Hello! The messy bun hat craze has hit so many crocheters and now it's my turn! This is my take on the messy bun hat but I wanted ear flaps on mine. How do ya'll like my Bad Hair Day hat? I kind of love and it is so comfortable to wear! Scroll down for the free crochet pattern!





The Bad Hair Day Messy Bun Ear Flap Hat

Materials

Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
Medium 4 Yarn (I used Yarn Bee Effervesce Yarn) about 70 grams
Scissors
Darning needle
Measuring tape
Optional: 
Embroidery thread for "Bad Hair Day"
Needle for embroidering
Puff ball maker (home-made or store bought)

Gauge

6 stitches and 3.5 rows = 2 inches

Size 

Adult small 
(20-22 inches)

Abbreviations

ch: chain
Sl st: slip stitch
sc: single crochet
dc: double crochet
2dc: double crochet increase
dc2tog: double crochet decrease


The Pattern

R1: Make a slip knot and ch 22. Sl st into the first ch to make a loop and ch 2. (The ch 2 does not count as a dc here and throughout the pattern.) Put 2dc into the same ch and in each ch around. Sl st to to the first dc of the round. =44 
*The diameter of the hole is approximately 2.25 inches.*
*The diameter of the circle is approximately 4.25 inches.*

R2: ch 2, 2dc into the same stitch, dc into the next 3 stitches. *2dc in the next stitch, dc in the next 3 stitches.* Repeat from the star around. Sl st to the first dc of the round. =55

R3: ch 2, 2dc into the same stitch, dc into the next 4 stitches. *2dc in the next stitch, dc in the next 4 stitches.* Repeat from the star around. Sl st to the first dc of the round. =66
*The diameter of the circle is between 6.50  and 6.75 inches.*

R4-R9: ch 2, dc into the same stitch and in each stitch around. Sl st to the first dc. =66
Cut the yarn and weave in the ends. 

The Ear Flaps

Ear Flap 1

Make sure the hat is right side out with the back seam facing you. Count to the left 10 stitches, insert the hook and slip stitch in.

R1: ch 3, (the chain 3 does count as a dc here and throughout the pattern) dc into the next 10 stitches. =11

R2: ch 3 and turn your work. dc2tog 2x, dc in the next stitch, dc2tog 2x, dc into the top of the ch 3. =7

R3: ch 3 and turn your work. dc2tog, dc in the next stitch, dc2tog, dc into the top of the ch 3. =5

R4: ch 3 and turn your work. dc2tog 2x. =3
Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Ear Flap 2

Make sure the hat is right side out with the back seam facing you. Count to the right 19 stitches, insert the hook and slip stitch in. Follow the pattern for Ear Flap 1. Cut the yarn and weave in the ends. 

The Border

Make sure the hat is right side out with the back seam facing you. Insert the hook into the middle of the hat in the last row and slip stitch in. Ch 1 and sc around the entire hat. Cut the yarn and weave in the ends. 

Add braids, tassels or puff balls, and embroider "Bad Hair Day" if you would like.
